3 Strategies for Managing Self-Doubt or Imposter Syndrome

Here are my top three strategies to manage feelings of doubt or imposter syndrome as an Afro-Latina bilingual professional.

About me

As you may know, I earned a doctorate in Health Sciences with a concentration in Education and Global Health. I’m a first-generation college graduate and Latina educational consultant helping nontraditional and first-generation college students achieve their academic and professional goals through courses, workshops, mentoring, and individual sessions. I have been an adjunct professor for 5+ years.

Why imposter syndrome?

Many women, especially underrepresented minorities, suffer from imposter syndrome when experiencing success or professional recognition but do not feel worthy of that achievement.

Imposter syndrome affected me both personally and professionally causing me to doubt my abilities and to overthink my entrepreneurial plans. Fortunately, I was able to stop the negative thoughts, behaviors, and ideas by practicing healthy habits and lots of affirmations.

My top 3 effective strategies to combat imposter syndrome

Here are my top three effective strategies to combat imposter syndrome (manage feelings of doubt or imposter syndrome):

Acknowledge your negative beliefs, thoughts, and opinions.

Take a moment to understand or reflect on why you're having these negative thoughts. Determine whether these thoughts are true or false. Most likely, they are false! If they're false, ignore them! If you think they're true, then continue to the next tip.

Reprogram your negative thoughts.

For example, if you're having doubts about your next big project, think positively about the future, your skills, and experience. All these assets make you a great fit to take on your new project. Repeat positive affirmations about yourself: "I have the skills, experience, educational background, or unique personality that align with the expectations of the project."

Determine whether those negative thoughts, behaviors, or ideas are affecting your professional or personal life

If so, I urge you to seek professional help as imposter syndrome is often associated with depression or anxiety and is also associated with poor job performance and burnout among various professional groups. If you are not fond of psychology, or therapy, try life coaching with a coach that you feel comfortable with. Talk to your family and friends. Rely on your support system to help you succeed.

Bonus: Stay Positive!

Remember that you can do all things you set your mind to. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Stay positive!

I trust you will find these strategies helpful!
